Book #48: Purple Hibiscus

“Because God has given you so much, He expects much from you. He expects perfection.”
Set during the Nigerian civil war, Purple Hibiscus is a compelling read. While the story may be set during the war, many other issues come into play. Kambili, the main character, is the product of an abusive childhood and her realisation of this is a main focus. The issue of Christian fundamentalism in Nigeria is also highlighted.
Kambili has grown up in a life of privilege. Her father is a wealthy businessman, as well as a hardcore Catholic and strict disciplinarian. Kambili is an extreme introvert. She sees nothing wrong with the way she has been living until she spends time away from home with her aunt’s family.
Gradually, as she spends more and more time with her cousins, she realises what a family should be. She sees that her aunt and cousins home, a much simpler home, is full of love and laughter. No one is afraid to speak their mind. This realisation changes her life forever.
