Book #51: The Maze Runner

“This is crazy. How can this be for real? Somebody sent us here. Somebody evil.”
The Maze Runner begins with Thomas waking up in an elevator with absolutely no recollection of how he got there. He is then transported into a place called the Glade, a place inhabited solely by teenage boys. Although, he has no memory, the Glade seems familiar to Thomas, and he seems familiar to some of the boys already living there.
This wasn’t my favourite dystopian book. It seemed that the characters were never fully developed. It appeared that they were interesting people with distinct personalities, but it was never explored in too much depth.
The story also took a while to really pick up. The beginning two-thirds of the book was spent delivering background information. While this information was important, I don’t think it was necessary for it to be focused on so much, especially when character development lacked so much.
It was a fast read, so I wouldn’t not recommend it to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction. The ending also led nicely into the second book of the series, and while I didn’t fully enjoy The Maze Runner, I do want to read the next book.
