Book #50: Birthmarked

“You always have a choice, Gaia, you can always say no.”
Set in the future, this novel touches on many of the same ideas that most dystopian novels do: population control, division between the rich and poor, babies taken from families, reproductive slavery.
The story follows Gaia, a girl living on the outside who is following in her mother’s footsteps of becoming a midwife. When her parents are arrested, Gaia’s life changes. She had always loyally served the Enclave, the world inside the walls. The arrest of her parents changes her opinion of the Enclave and makes her question everything she has ever known.
It is hard to write fully about this book without giving away the plot, so let me just say this: The world in which Gaia and her companions live is an interesting one, based on unquestioning obedience. The story is gripping and the ending leaves the reader with many questions.
