For what did I know?

Book #27: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

“The meaning of my thoughts started to float away from me, like leaves that fall from a tree into a river, I was the tree, the world was the river.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a sucker for reading accounts of disaster whether they be fictional or factual.

This book was the story of nine year-old Oskar Schell trying to find one last connection to his father who died in the 9/11 attacks two years prior. It reminded me a little bit of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time only because it showed the world through the eyes of a child. Oskar’s view of the world is refreshing. He still sees everything with a sense of wonder, but he is also incredibly smart and has incredible insight.

Many people have given this book bad reviews. They say that the author is manipulative. Aren’t all authors manipulative? Don’t they all want us to feel and react a certain way? This book evokes feelings of nostalgia, sadness and joy. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
